Course Migration from ANGEL to Blackboard Learn
As part of the implementation of Blackboard Learn, Instructional Technology and Design will be migrated over ANGEL course sites to Blackboard Learn for faculty. The content (including files, pages, announcements, discussion forums, drop box activities, and tests) from an ANGEL course site will easily migrated over to Blackboard Learn.
The following points outline what faculty will see when they open their migrated course site in Blackboard Learn.
Here are some things to be aware of with the course migration.
If there are any questions about the migration, please email the NSCC Blackboard Learn Helpdesk at bbhelp@northshore.edu.
The following points outline what faculty will see when they open their migrated course site in Blackboard Learn.
- All content in the Lessons tab (ANGEL) will go into a content area called Content (Blackboard Learn).
- A syllabus uploaded in the Syllabus nugget on the course home page (ANGEL) will go into an area called Information (Blackboard Learn).
- All discussion forums (ANGEL) will go into the Discussion Board tool page (Blackboard Learn) and will also be linked from the appropriate content folder.
- Any private journal discussions (ANGEL) will go into the Journals tool page (Blackboard Learn) and will also be linked from the appropriate content folder.
- Announcements (ANGEL) will go into the Announcements tool page (Blackboard Learn).
- Drop Box assignments (ANGEL) will be recreated as Assignments in a content area called Content within the appropriate content folder (Blackboard Learn).
- Quizzes, tests, surveys, and question pools (ANGEL) will migrate over to the Tests, Surveys, and Pools course tools area (Blackboard Learn) as well as be deployed within the appropriate content folder.
- Any gradable item (ANGEL) will be set up in the Full Grade Center (Blackboard Learn).
- Any teams (ANGEL) will be set up in the Groups area of the Control Panel (Blackboard Learn).
- Any rubrics (ANGEL) will be set up in the Rubrics course tools area (Blackboard Learn).
Here are some things to be aware of with the course migration.
- Student data: No student data is brought over with the course migration - just the course content.
- First name token: This will not work in Blackboard Learn and any references to $FIRST_NAME$ will need to be removed.
- Subtitles: There are no subtitles for content items in Blackboard so any subtitles used in an ANGEL course will not carry over to Blackboard. If subtitles were used, here are some recommendations:
- For assignment and discussion due dates, please use the due date feature within the Assignments and Discussion Board tools or add into the Calendar.
- For instructions, please use the text box editor for the item in Blackboard Learn to enter those instruction materials.
- For other types of subtitles, consider including them in the title field (for example, Syllabus: Start Here).
- Assessments: Algorithmic questions in tests might not import correctly during the course migration. If so, these types of questions would need to be recreated manually.
- Agents: There are no agents in Blackboard Learn.
- If agents were used in ANGEL to release content, the Adaptive Release feature of Blackboard Learn can be used.
- If agents were used to automatically send email to students based on a certain condition, there is, unfortunately, no corresponding feature in Blackboard Learn. But there are various ways to easily see students’ progress and email them.
- Games: Games (crossword puzzle or quiz show) will not migrate over since there is no corresponding feature in Blackboard Learn.
- Resources and RSS Feeds: Course resources or RSS feeds added in the Resources tab will not migrate over to Blackboard Learn. Course resources can be set up as Web Links in Blackboard Learn.
- Learning Objects Repository: Items linked into a course from the Learning Objects Repository in ANGEL will not migrate over to Blackboard Learn. These items can be stored in the Content Collection in Blackboard Learn and then linked into the course.
If there are any questions about the migration, please email the NSCC Blackboard Learn Helpdesk at bbhelp@northshore.edu.

- A message about an exciting professional development opportunity from Andrea DeFusco-Sullivan: "Calling all NSCC faculty (full and part time). Bonnie Orcutt from the Department of Higher Education has asked me to pass this information along to North Shore faculty. The AAC&U is looking for faculty members from selected colleges to assess the work collected by the current Multi-State Collaborative Pilot Assessment of Critical Thinking, Written Communication, and Quantitative Reasoning. No prior participation in pilots or other types of training is necessary. This would involve some significant commitments. First, the faculty person would need to commit to traveling to the AAC&U conference in Kansas City, Missouri from February 17-19th for training. Flights, accommodations, meals, and a stipend would be covered by the AAC&U. You would be joining your colleges from across the state and across the country in this training! The second part of the commitment involves the work of assessing the student artifacts; this would be done electronically, and could be done from home. Each faculty person will be asked to score about 135 artifacts, and would receive a stipend from the Gates Foundation. Right now, I'm just sending out feelers and asking who might be able to and interested in doing this. We can send two faculty members to the training, but I've been asked to submit four names in case a sudden life event prevents folks from going. Send an email to me if you're interested!"
Please send your teaching strategies or resources to itd@northshore.edu and we will share them in upcoming issues of iDevelop.
- Creating a storyboard before sitting down to record a video for your classes is a great idea. Not only will it provide you with a road map of what you are going to say in the video and what will appear on the screen for students to see, it will also be a useful tool when it comes to ensuring that those videos are accessible for all your students. If you are interested in pursuing this further, please contact ITD at itd@northshore.edu. We are happy to assist you in developing your storyboard and creating your video.

Blackboard Learn Implementation Update
Over the summer, Academic Technology (AT) and Information Systems (IS) kicked off the implementation of the latest version of Blackboard Learn and the migration away from ANGEL. The entire process will take approximately a year to complete and will occur in several phases.
During June and July, AT and IS worked on installing, setting up and customizing the Blackboard Learn environment; conducted internal training on Blackboard Learn to become familiar with the ins and outs of the system; tested and documented the course migration process; and prepared for the fall pilot of Blackboard Learn. In August, AT facilitated several professional development opportunities for faculty participating in the pilot to prepare them to teach with Blackboard Learn in September. This fall, 21 faculty are piloting Blackboard Learn in 29 course sections.
The next phase of the implementation will be to deliver all online and hybrid courses for the intersession and spring 2015 semesters in Blackboard Learn. Training for faculty and course migration is ongoing throughout the fall semester. Workshops and open labs will also be offered in January 2015. ANGEL will be operational during this time and all spring 2015 face-to-face courses will be delivered in ANGEL.
For the summer 2015 semesters, all summer courses (online, hybrid, and face-to-face) will be delivered in Blackboard Learn. Training for faculty and course migration will occur during the spring 2015 semester. At this point, ANGEL will be taken offline and will not be used to deliver any courses.
For the fall 2015 semester, all fall courses (online, hybrid, and face-to-face) will be delivered in Blackboard Learn. Training for faculty and course migration will occur during the spring and summer semesters. ANGEL will be offline and will not be used to deliver any courses.
We will continue to update the campus community about the implementation through the Bulletin, email, Facebook, and this blog. More information about Blackboard Learn and the migration is available at ITD's Blackboard Learn Site.
Please feel free to contact us at itd@northshore.edu with any questions or concerns about the Blackboard Learn implementation.

Fall 2014 Technology Across the Curriculum (TAC) Grant Applications Due Tuesday, November 18th
Fall TAC grant application materials are now available and proposals are due by 11:59PM on Tuesday, November 18th.
There are two new integrating technology into the curriculum projects that we want to spotlight.
Open Educational Resources
NSCC faculty can apply for a TAC grant to help replace their textbook or course materials with Open Educational Resources.
"Open Educational Resources are teaching, learning or research materials that are in the public domain or released with an intellectual property license that allows for free use, adaptation, and distribution." (Source: UNESCO. http://www.unesco.org/new/en/communication-and-information/access-to-knowledge/open-educational-resources/)
Faculty will be paired with a Librarian and Instructional Designer to find materials and resources relevant to the course that the instructor can use to replace or reduce the overall cost of course materials for students. To learn more about Open Educational Resources and see some of the resources available (including textbooks, lesson plans, videos, and other relevant course content), check out the NSCC LibGuide at http://libguides.northshore.edu/open.
Redesigning an Online Course
NSCC faculty who have been teaching an online course for several years may want to redesign their online course to incorporate new pedagogies and instructional technologies, especially as our new LMS, Blackboard Learn, offers more robust possibilities than did ANGEL. This TAC project will allow faculty to self-assess the design of their online courses and make substantive changes. Faculty will have the opportunity to work with an Instructional Designer to revitalize their online courses with the infusion of new instructional technologies and best practices around teaching and learning online.
Please contact Andrea Milligan or Lance Eaton at itd@northshore.edu for further information or questions about these TAC options.
More information about TAC grants and the application process is available here.

“I currently have a course that I am "flipping". To ensure students prepare, I assign review questions that have to be done before class. Since this is a management class and we are learning time management, I absolutely don't accept late assignments. Students have been very responsive and most are keeping up.”

“I've been using a flipped classroom format to teach source integration and citation in my CMP1 class. Over the course of several class meetings and a week or two, students watch [videos I provide them]. I also send them ppt's for their notes. To ensure accountability for the material, I then give students a very fast quiz at the beginning of class.
Source integration is pretty complex: in addition to the mechanical stuff (MLA citation, format), the overall goal when integrating sources is to develop ideas appropriate and insightful for academic settings. Using a flipped classroom format helps me cover the basics more efficiently. When I cover the basics more efficiently, that gives me more class time to focus on practice, content, and higher-level thinking strategies. The flipped classroom format has cleared up a lot of class time--probably a week, maybe more--so I can focus on enriched content.”

Thursday, October 23rd, 11:30am and 7:30pm at Monserrat College of Art: FREE Public Artist Talk and Performance of LOOSE
Please join D’hana Perry for a Public Artist Talk on Thursday, October 23rd at 11:30am and a live performance of LOOSE on Thursday, October 23rd at 7:30pm in the 301 Gallery on 301 Cabot St. NYC artist D'hana Perry's LOOSE is a reconceptualization of what a "documentary" can be, and an autobiographical examination of how gender expression and racial identity affect each other when we navigate public space. It explores a concept of remixing as: 1) a process of mental and physical image appropriation and 2) a mode of existence and survival, which turn everyday interactions into a creative act. LOOSE is designed to be improvisational. No two performances are the same. For more information, see http://www.montserrat.edu/calendar.

Technology Across the Curriculum Grant Applications - Fall 2014
The Technology Across the Curriculum (TAC) Committee invites all North Shore Community College (NSCC) full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and professional teaching staff to submit applications to develop a TAC project in the spring of 2015 with implementation in the summer or fall of 2015.
Fall application materials are now available and proposals are due by 11:59PM on Tuesday, November 18th. No late applications will be accepted under any circumstances. Notification of awards will be made before the end of the semester.
There are two types of TAC applications: one for faculty wishing to develop online/hybrid courses and one for those wishing to develop projects that integrate technology into their curriculum. For faculty wishing to develop online/hybrid courses, there are two separate applications, one for faculty new to online course development, and one for faculty who have already developed online courses at NSCC.
1. If you would like to develop an online/hybrid course:
Please contact Andrea Milligan or Lance Eaton. They will explain the process and discuss the expectations, have you complete some short readiness activities, and give you an application. You will also need to discuss your plans with, and get the approval of, your Division Dean.
The design and development phase for faculty new to teaching an online/hybrid course at North Shore Community College begins with a 6 week online course, Teaching and Learning Online. This online course will run January 2 – February 15, 2015 (for fall 2015 and spring 2016 courses) and May 15 – June 28, 2015 (for spring 2016 courses only).
Applications and process are available during your consultation with Andrea Milligan or Lance Eaton.
2. If you would like to develop a project integrating technology into the curriculum:
Apply for a TAC grant. The application also includes project ideas and the description of the TAC process. Please read all of the materials before completing your application. Division Deans and Department Chairs would appreciate an email letting them know about your ideas so they can support your efforts.
Please note:
We hope you will consider applying for a TAC grant and look forward to assisting you in any way we can in that process.
Andrea Milligan, Director of Instructional Technology and Design, and Terri Whitney, TAC Coordinator and Professor of English

- These application materials are also available on Pipeline. To access, go to the My Northshore tab and click the Technology Across the Curriculum link (left column in the Faculty Resources box.)
- Applicants need not have high level experience using technology, but because the TAC grant is becoming highly competitive, we urge applicants to prepare their applications carefully, making sure the descriptive narrative is thorough and clear. We are also, of course, interested in the applicant’s motivation and willingness to think about how technology can improve his/her teaching.

- "A great way of using the class time most effectively is to develop quizzes that students must take in ANGEL the day before class. These quizzes should be based upon the reading or assigned work. If they are due the day before class, that gives you time to go into the quiz and see what questions students got right and which ones they got wrong. This will help you to determine what needs more attention during class. Both instructor and student come to class with a better understanding of what they need to learn."
