Preparing for January Intersession and Spring 2017 Courses in Blackboard Learn

As you start to think about your January intersession and spring courses, we wanted to share with you the following important information that will help you prepare your course site in Blackboard Learn.

Copying a Course
To copy a previous course site into a new one in Blackboard Learn:
  1. Go into the course site that has the content to copy. In the Control Panel, expand the "Packages and Utilities" section and click Course Copy.
  2. On the next screen, in the “Select Copy Type” section, make sure Copy Course Materials into Existing Course is selected in the drop down menu.
  3. Now, in the “Select Copy Options” section, next to the Destination Course ID field, click Browse. Then, find and select the Course ID for the new course (the one you want to put the content into). Click Submit.
  4. Select the Course Materials that you want to copy over to the new course. Usually, Select All is the best choice, although you might not want to copy announcements.
    1. If Select All is not used, make sure to include Grade Center Columns and Settings if Assignments and/or Tests are being copied.
    2. Also, under Discussion Board, select Include only the forums, with no starter posts if threads are not created by the instructor for students to respond to. If not, all student threads will copy over as anonymous and they will need to be deleted.
  5. In the “File Attachments” section, keep the default settings.
  6. Click Submit.
Please note: When a previous course site is copied over into a new course site, any new or changed content areas will be added to the bottom of the course menu.

Make Your Course Available
All Blackboard Learn course sites are unavailable to students by default. Here are the directions for making the course site available to your students. To open your course:
  1. Go into the course site.
  2. On the Control Panel, expand the "Customization" section and click Properties.
  3. On the next screen, in the "Set Availability" section, select Yes to make the course available.
  4. Click Submit.

On Thursday, November 17th from 11:00am to 12:15pm, NSCC professors yusef Hayes and Troy Smith will present on “Malcom X: His Social and Spiritual Legacy – 50 Years On”. The lecture will take place in the Lynn Gym. Together they will examine both the social justice and spiritual legacies of Malcolm X, 50 years after his assassination and his lasting impression on Black America from spirituality to the Black Lives Matter Movement. This lecture offers a valuable opportunity to more fully understand Malcolm–the individual–who was both an advocate for human rights and a spiritual being.
  • The Hunting Ground. On November 15th and November 17th, NSCC will host a screening and discussion of the documentary, The Hunting Ground, as part of its Title IX educational programming efforts. The documentary takes a look into sexual assault, sexual harassment, and sexual violence on college campuses via expert insights and first-person testimonies. The film follows undergraduate rape survivors pursuing both their education and justice, despite ongoing harassment and the devastating toll on them and their families. Immediately following the movie, Dean Williamson will lead a brief discussion followed by a Q&A session. In case the film invokes strong emotional responses, NSCC Crisis Counselors will be on hand. The screenings will take place on both campuses: Tuesday, November 15th from 11:00am to 12:30pm in the Lynn McGee Gymnasium and Thursday, November 17th from 11:00am to 12:30pm in Danvers Math & Science Room 119.

NSCC and NCBI: Partners in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
North Shore Community College and the National Coalition Building Institute are in partnership to provide the college community with academic and life skill resources in diversity, equity, inclusion, and conflict resolution. The work in these areas is aligned with the college’s mission that fosters a “diverse, caring, and inclusive” community for our future workforce to make a difference in our ever-changing world. NCBI is here for the larger NSCC community but the primary focus of the work has been in the classroom. The primary goal is to create a culturally competent student who can engage with the world, working with our similarities to bridge our differences. In the classroom, the goals include:
  1. Identifying the information and misinformation that we learn about other groups.
  2. Identifying and expressing prides in the groups to which we personally belong.
  3. Leaning how groups, other than our own, get mistreated or oppressed.
  4. Learning how specifics incidents of discrimination affect us personally.
  5. Learning strategies for shifting the attitude of those who make prejudicial remarks or slurs.
The NCBI team on campus is composed of a small but effective group of faculty, staff, and sometimes students. Thus far this semester, the NCBI team has gone into 9 classrooms to provide diversity workshops. We are planning 5 more classroom sessions before the semester ends. If you’d like to utilize the expertise of the NCBI team in your classroom, please contact David Houle. We can make a difference in the world, one person at a time.

MA CC Go Open Grant Opportunity - Second Round of OER Proposals

A second round of the MA Go Open OER Grant Program has been announced. All NSCC part-time and full-time faculty are invited to apply for grants to support Open Educational Resources (OER) in their courses. Faculty who receive a grant in Round 2 will join their colleagues from across the state who have been awarded Round 1 grants to save Massachusetts Community College students close to $1 million in the next academic year.

[Public Domain image]
In Round 2, as in Round 1, proposal funds will range from $300 to $2,500 with options to adopt, adapt or build course “textbooks”.

Interested in Applying for a Grant?

Visit the MA CC Go Open Call for Proposals site for more details on applying for a grant - including levels of adoption, courses eligible for this funding, faculty planning worksheet and online application. The second round of applications are due December 10th. Note: While your course needs to be on the list to be eligible, it does not have to be listed at your particular college for you to apply with it.

This is an amazing opportunity to customize your course and make the materials your students NEED to be successful in your course available to them for free and we hope you will consider submitting an application.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please email Larry Davis at ldavis@northshore.edu or Andrea Milligan at amilliga@northshore.edu.

  • Special Library Exhibit. The Library is proud to share with the entire NSCC community a traveling exhibit, “For All The People: A Century of Citizen Action in Health Care Reform”, presented by the National Libraries of Medicine. The exhibit will be in the Danvers Library from September 26th to November 5th. Health care reform has been a contentious political issue in the United States for more than a hundred years, and is as important as ever in upcoming Presidential election. From the beginning of the 20th century to today, citizens have made their voices heard in these debates. “For All the People” tells the lesser-known story of how movements of ordinary people helped shape the changing American health care system. If you are interested in curricular or Teach-In tie-ins, please contact the Library Director, Rex Krajewski. More information on this exhibit can be found at https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/forallthepeople/index.html.
  • Special Library Display for Presidential Election. Between October 3rd and November 8th, the library will present physical and virtual displays containing Library and other information resources about the upcoming General Election that support the Presidential Election Teach-In, the Forum on Tolerance, and faculty teaching. Contact Torrey Dukes or Sarah Tremblay in the Library to suggest additions to the display and/or the Library collection.

Technology Across the Curriculum Grant Applications - Fall 2016

The Technology Across the Curriculum (TAC) Committee invites all North Shore Community College (NSCC) full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and professional teaching staff to submit applications to develop a TAC project in the spring of 2017 with implementation in the summer or fall of 2017.

Fall application materials are now available and proposals are due by 11:59PM on Tuesday, November 15th. No late applications will be accepted under any circumstances. Notification of awards will be made before the end of the semester.

There are two types of TAC applications: one for faculty wishing to develop online/hybrid courses and one for those wishing to develop projects that integrate technology into their curriculum. For faculty wishing to develop online/hybrid courses, there are two separate applications, one for faculty new to online course development, and one for faculty who have already developed online courses at NSCC.

1. If you would like to develop an online/hybrid course:

Please contact your Division Dean to discuss your interest in developing an online or hybrid course. Conversations around priorities for online and hybrid conversations will be occurring in Division meetings. Your Division Dean will then provide you with information on next steps for completing a TAC application.

The design and development phase for faculty new to teaching an online/hybrid course at North Shore Community College begins with a 6 week online course, Teaching and Learning Online. This online course will run January 2 – February 12, 2017 (for fall 2017 and spring 2018 courses) and May 15 – June 25, 2017 (for spring 2018 courses only).

Applications and process are available during your consultation with Andrea Milligan.

2. If you would like to develop a project integrating technology into the curriculum:

Apply for a TAC grant. The application also includes project ideas and the description of the TAC process. Please read all of the materials before completing your application. Division Deans and Department Chairs would appreciate an email letting them know about your ideas so they can support your efforts.
Please note:
  • The technology integration project application materials are available on Pipeline. To access, go to the My Northshore tab and click the Technology Across the Curriculum link (left column in the Faculty Resources box.)
  • Applicants need not have high level experience using technology, but because the TAC grant is becoming highly competitive, we urge applicants to prepare their applications carefully, making sure the descriptive narrative is thorough and clear. We are also, of course, interested in the applicant’s motivation and willingness to think about how technology can improve his/her teaching.
Finally, we would be delighted to answer any questions or discuss application ideas.

We hope you will consider applying for a TAC grant and look forward to assisting you in any way we can in that process.

Terri Whitney, TAC Coordinator and Professor of English, and Andrea Milligan, Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Innovation
