Update on Upcoming Maintenance for Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
Blackboard has moved the maintenance window for the Collaborate Ultra v21.02 update to Thursday, February 25. On Thursday, February 25th between from 2:00 AM EST to 6:00 AM EST, Collaborate Ultra users will experience intermittent availability.

  • 2021 Teaching, Learning, and Student Development Conference. The 2021 Teaching, Learning, and Student Development Conference Committee invites proposals for virtual presentations for the 2021 TLSD Conference which will be hosted by Quinsigamond Community College on April 9, 2021. Tools for the New Normal: Innovations in Access, Equity, and Student Success is the theme of the 2021 event. All Massachusetts Community College faculty and staff are encouraged to share their knowledge and expertise in those areas. All workshops will be 30 minutes in length, followed by a Question-and-Answer period of 15 minutes. We celebrate the opportunity to encourage participants to readily adapt technology-based tools and innovative practices needed to ensure quality access, equity, and student success in the new normal. "The editorial board of the Teaching Online Pedagogical Repository (TOPR) is pleased to announce a call for submissions for new TOPR entries from now until March 15, 2021. This resource is a go-to destination for faculty and designers. Last year, over 130,000 users visited TOPR in search of ideas for online and blended teaching strategies. Each peer-reviewed entry is highly focused on one teaching practice with a solid description, concrete example(s), relevant professional practice or research literature, and key words connecting to other practices.     Preparing for Spring 2021 Courses in Blackboard Learn

     As you start to think about your spring courses, we wanted to share with you the following important information that will help you prepare your course site in Blackboard Learn.

    Copying a Course
    To copy a previous course site into a new one in Blackboard Learn:
    1. Go into the course site that has the content to copy. In the Control Panel, expand the "Packages and Utilities" section and click Course Copy.
    2. On the next screen, in the “Select Copy Type” section, make sure Copy Course Materials into Existing Course is selected in the drop down menu.
    3. Now, in the “Select Copy Options” section, next to the Destination Course ID field, click Browse. Then, find and select the Course ID for the new course (the one you want to put the content into). Click Submit.
    4. Select the Course Materials that you want to copy over to the new course. Usually, Select All is the best choice, although you might not want to copy announcements.
      1. If Select All is not used, make sure to include Grade Center Columns and Settings if Assignments and/or Tests are being copied.
      2. Also, under Discussion Board, select Include only the forums, with no starter posts if threads are not created by the instructor for students to respond to. If not, all student threads will copy over as anonymous and they will need to be deleted.
    5. In the “File Attachments” section, keep the default settings.
    6. Click Submit.
    Please note: When a previous course site is copied over into a new course site, any new or changed content areas will be added to the bottom of the course menu.

    Make Your Course Available
    All Blackboard Learn course sites are unavailable to students by default. Here are the directions for making the course site available to your students. If you are in your course site, you should see a lock icon up at the top of your course site (to the left of Edit Mode). If you click that lock icon, it will make the course available to students. 

    If you do not see the lock icon, here are the directions for making it available to your students.

    To open your course:
    1. Go into the course site.
    2. On the Control Panel, expand the "Customization" section and click Properties.
    3. On the next screen, in the "Set Availability" section, select Yes to make the course available.
    4. Click Submit.

    Once you course has been copied over, please review this checklist at https://goo.gl/18q3r5 to help you make sure your course site in Blackboard Learn is ready to go for the upcoming semester.

    20 Minute Mentor - Online Faculty Professional Development - Spring 2021 Schedule

    The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Innovation (CTLI) offers faculty a professional development series from Magna Publications, called the 20 Minute Mentor. The goal of the 20 Minute Mentor series is to offer faculty practical professional development opportunities in twenty minute snippets that can be accessed from anywhere and at any time during the given week. Session topics cover the areas of student engagement, teaching and learning, teaching online, assessment and learning goals, and classroom management.

    Information on how to access the 20 Minute Mentor sessions is available each week in the Bulletin and the iDevelop e-newsletter.

    New video presentations (with supplementary materials) go live at 10:00am each Monday morning and are only accessible through Sunday.

      • Our Students at Risk: The Basic Needs Security Landscape. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted growing inequities within public higher education and an urgent need to address basic needs security among students. Simply put, students at risk of losing their housing or unable to feed themselves are far less likely to remain enrolled in college. The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, in partnership with other state agencies and a dozen public institutions, has begun to address these issues with a series of pilot programs specifically aimed at reducing student housing insecurity and homelessness. This year we are expanding our work, using lessons learned through the pilots to develop a state-level strategic plan for addressing a broader spectrum of basic needs - including housing, food, technology, child care and mental health care. Faculty play an essential role in identifying and responding to students who may benefit from services and/or interventions. To support the ongoing work of your faculty with students, the DHE plans a series of 1-hour Zoom webinars for faculty this year. The information for the first webinar is below:
        Our Students at Risk: The Basic Needs Security Landscape -  A Data-Informed Discussion with Faculty
        Tuesday, November 17 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm
        Guest Presentation by Christine Baker-Smith, Executive Director, Hope Center for College, Community & Justice, Temple University   
        Christine Baker-Smith is the Executive Director of the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice. Before joining the Hope Center, she was a lecturer in Research Methodology for the Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences M.A. program at Columbia University and an Education Policy Analyst for the NYC Independent Budget Office. A sociologist of education, Christine’s training is in mixed-methods research and causal inference with a focus on student social and academic engagement across schooling transitions. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University in Sociology of Education, an EdM in Leadership, Policy, and Politics from Teachers College, Columbia University, an MA in Social Sciences of Education from Stanford University, and a BA in Sociology from Whitman College.

The conference keynote speaker will be Dr. Natasha Jankowski, executive director of NILOA, who will give a talk entitled, “Equity & Assessment: Moving Towards Culturally Responsive Assessment.” Dr. Jankowski is one of the country’s leading voices on the topic of equity in assessment work. Session leaders from public and private institutions will share their knowledge and experience during eight 75-minute workshops. The conference’s morning session will focus on applying the equity agenda to assessment in practice, and the afternoon session will explore assessment tools & approaches. Of particular note for those interested in the topic of Transparency in Learning and Teaching, Dr. Mary-Ann Winkelmes will be leading one of the conference’s afternoon sessions.

        iDevelop – NSCC’s Faculty Professional Development eNewsletter (10/19/2020)

        Welcome to iDevelop, a weekly eNewsletter providing faculty with information about professional development opportunities at NSCC.         The Monday Morning Mentor series will be available over the spring semester to bring you professional development in twenty minute snippets. The topic for the week of October 19th is How Can I Use Technology to Foster the Emotional Processing of Course Content? The presentation is available Monday at 10:00am and is accessible through Sunday of that week.         • 44th Forum on Tolerance. This year, the Forum on Tolerance is focusing on Black Lives Matter: the U.S. Journey towards Justice and Healing and will take place in individual segments that will be broadcast over Zoom Monday, October 19th through Thursday, October 22nd. The keynote for this event will be Georgetown Professor of Sociology and minister, Michael Eric Dyson http://michaelericdyson.com/.  Dr. Dyson is a New York Times contributing opinion writer, a contributing editor of The New Republic, and of ESPN's The Undefeated website. Some of his recent books are The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America (2016), Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America (2017), What Truth Sounds Like (2018), and JAY-Z: Made in America (2019).
