Other Professional Development Opportunities
  • Fifth Annual Conference on Civic Learning and Engagement. DHE’s Fifth Annual Conference on Civic Learning and Engagement, entitled Making Democracy Work: Civic Learning and Civic Engagement in Higher Education, will be held at Fitchburg State University from 8:15am to 3:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28th. “Democracy has to be born anew every generation,” said John Dewey just over 100 years ago, “and education is its midwife.” Given the competing priorities that pull at each of our institutions, how do we claim civic education as a core part of our academic mission? How do we build the learning opportunities—in our classrooms and in our communities—that enable students to develop the knowledge, the skills, and the dispositions and motivations they need to participate effectively in civic life? This conference offers faculty and staff from colleges and universities across southern New England the opportunity to explore with peers how we can cultivate in our students the habits of democracy. The conference will feature: a continental breakfast; a keynote address by Caryn McTighe Musil, Senior Director of Civic Learning and Democracy Initiatives, Association of American Colleges and Universities; an opportunity for small group discussion of issues raised in the opening address with participants from the same institutional type (community colleges or four-year institutions); a networking lunch; and two sets of breakout sessions. Register as soon as you can, because space will be limited. The conference fee is waived for participants from Massachusetts public colleges and universities. You can register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/making-democracy-work-civic-learning-and-civic-engagement-in-higher-education-tickets-60304228571. You can find detailed information about the conference there, then click on “Tickets” to register. Please contact Cate Kaluzny if you have any questions.
